偷雞唔到蝕渣米 (6 replies)

I was searching 偷雞唔到蝕揸米 in CantoDict, but it is not in the data base, then I Googled it, and found only 偷雞唔到蝕渣米, ( it is not in CantoDict neither)

put aside why 偷雞唔到蝕渣米 is not in CantoDict, I am more curious about why it is not " 揸米" ( a fistful of rice) but "渣米" ( broken bits; crumbs; scraps of rice)

If the 渣 in 偷雞唔到蝕渣米 is a classifier, it is not showed in the 渣 character page, so I have to presume it isn't.

If we stick with [classifier+noun] idea , it could has been 拃 instead of  渣  as in  偷雞唔到蝕拃米
[www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk]

For now, I just presume 偷雞唔到蝕(渣米)  is the correct one, and the English translation would be " not only failed to steal chickens, also lost (crumbs of rice) in the process" ( get no return for one's investment and/ or effort )

Can't find 孤寡鰥獨 or 鰥寡孤獨 in CantoDict.

Unlike 孤兒寡婦 - "orphan and widow" = " the dependents whom a dead man left behind " (which is not in CantoDict neither) , it is not a frequently used phrase, but I think all Chinese speakers should know what these four characters stand for in this phrase. and what it represent in Chinese culture.

孤 ~ 孤兒 ( orphan )
寡 ~ 寡婦 ( widowed woman)
鰥 ~ 鰥夫 ( widowed man)
獨 ~ 獨老( childless elderly people)

「孤寡鰥獨 」(orphans, widows and childless elderly people) =  "the disadvantaged group in the society /the unfortunate group in the population  "

** looking after 孤寡鰥獨 was a political agenda for some government that care about the well being of it's citizens, but in most cases, it was just a slogan that sounded good for PR.

** Old time China was a patriarchal society (男權社會) the situation of widowed men, were not as dire as orphans, widowed women and childless elders were facing. but we cannot just leave 鰥夫 out of the phrase.

** Since there was no social security in old China, the orphans, widows and childless elderly people were in real disadvantage.

Offline Copy of CantoDict Database (no replies)

Does anyone know how I could obtain a copy of the CantoDict Database? I would like to attempt developing a phonetic Cantonese IME for the desktop with it, which I believe has the potential to be more effective than the online-only Google Input Tools or CPIME which is no longer being updated (in contrast to our continually updated, decentralized, and popularly-based database and community). Specifically, I would need characters for words, jyutping with tones/sandhi, and word frequency/popularity. English meaning for the words would also probably be useful for helping semi/illiterate Cantonese speakers ensure that they have written the correct characters.
I tried emailing cantocontact@sheik.co.uk but got a '550 Administrative prohibition (local part not handled)' error

Now, playing golf entails a wonderful deal of twisting and straining on your bad muscle tissue. If you don't opt for right golf swing coaching,[www.foxcross.co.uk] is very likely that your muscle tissues will be exhausted swiftly. Even worse, you might suffer from muscle cramps early in the round and will set off you to retire early from the game. Even although your golfing club from burner two. irons very best cost on-line store and ball is not all that heavy, you ought to apply the artwork of employing them collectively to give your self a lower rating. And this is specifically the place golfing swing instruction comes in helpful.

Woodland, a Topeka native, hits the ball harder and longer than just about anyone who plays the game of golf. There isn't a driving variety in America that can hold him. A handful of many years in the past, word received around that Titleist had clocked Woodland's ball velocity off the tee as more quickly than Woods'. All of a sudden, Woodland had this reputation as golf's Paul Bunyan.

In terms of distance, the RocketBladez are similar to the low-cost Callaway Apex Pro Irons for sale, which tend to fly farther than most other irons. Nevertheless, I think the Bladez are somewhat far more forgiving. Exclusively, I was never ever a fan of the Burner two. four iron, but with the RocketBladez, I adore it.

Of course each player wants to perform on the pitch and putting higher-quality tee. But just as no two snowflakes precisely the identical movie in general, every single program has its personal set of engaging features, this characteristic or is in line to perform a certain sort of player tastes, or to make a sought after consequence.Callaway Big Bertha Alpha Driver is no exception, but it uncommon is that course a throwback to one more era. At that time, unless of course you want to present to pass by means of the lengthy ball cap, or the guidelines of the pole to swing with taylormade burner superfast two. driver and the explosive from the tee to play there will be no reward.

Stand out from the crowd and make heads flip with a huge straight drive down the fairway. Improved distance and accuracy in excess of my outdated Taylormade R9 SUPERTRI Driver. Strong truly feel even tho super light bodyweight.Callaway X Hot Irons was hitting the ball straighter and more with significantly less hard work. It felt light and cozy and made a noise like a cannon as the ball comes out of the centre. And if not, it appeared supremely forgiving.

Now mix in the uncertainty of his well being. Can he win five more majors to break Nicklaus' record? Can he win twelve more tournaments to break the PGA Tour record for most wins by Sam Snead?

The instructor should have the habit of significantly less talking and a lot more teaching. He must constantly target on the instruction, similarly as a learner a single ought to also follow it but aim at learning only.

Yet yet another effective way is to produce degree of smoothness in the swing motion planes. Smoothness implies that the actual golf enthusiast must not be quick while executing a swing motion. Numerous Callaway X-24 Irons execute your swing truly much more quickly as an end result creating the portion. The harsh perform from the golf enthusiast might be the big explanation for your banana ball. Give straightforward working with your sport.

When (if ever) do you start learning to read/write Cantonese? (6 replies)

I know everyone says you should learn to speak before you write Cantonese. But when should you start learning to read and write?

Right now I'm still actively learning to speak, and I don't think I'm fluent enough orally to start looking at reading and writing. But I'm curious to know if any other Cantonese learners without a Mandarin background have tried tackling the script, and if so, at what stage they started learning it.

CantoDic has  守株待兔 as: " waiting for something that will only happen once"

Logically speaking, if it happened once, it could happen again. (the tree is still there, and hares are still running around.)

守株待兔 is a fable tale, and the moral of the story is :  " Instead of passively wait for good fortune, you should actively work for your own livelihood."

Therefore, I would translate 守株待兔 as : "passively wait for good fortune. "

In Cantonese slang, it would be : "坐喺度等運到"( sit there waiting for luck to come) or simply "等運到"

The only con from the whole program, would have to be that every course language offered by Glossika is presumably the same sentences as every other language course they offer.

I downloaded a couple of their trials using multiple email addresses, didn't confirm it with all the languages they are currently offering that weren't previously available. What is really great about Cantonese, the one I have been focusing on, is that it really tries to engrave itself into your long term memory. I think the only thing that is required before taking the course, is determination, and obviously interest. Look for music, research the culture, study the lyrics of music. If your curiosity wells up and you want to discover and learn more about the beautiful Cantonese language and culture, I can't recommend Cantonese fluency course by Glossika enough. I tried TYC but the grammar route is a bit... lifeless to me. Glossika immediately begins your first day of phrases with stuff that you will actually hear around you in (presumably Cantonese speaking communities) a Cantonese friend's house in my experience. And to end my post, Cantonese, is a language, not a freaking dialect. Bam!

Hi everyone,

My parents are from guangzhou, and moved to Canda where I was born. Where I lived, there was not much Chinese, so I've hardly been exposed to custom.

I have questions about red pockets. Since i'm married, I know we should hand out red pocket to unmarried siblings. Last year, my parents told me we should give a red pocket to my ederly aunt at Chrsistmas, since weonly see hertwice in a year. Then the question i'm asking myself is if I should give red pocket my parents? They always talk about when kids gets bigs, they should give back some money to parents. That is unclear to me, and every time i ask my parents what they want as gift, they answer nothing. Should we give red pocket to my husband's parents?

Also, when I see my sister-in-law's parents (on my brother side), how should I call them? Auntie, uncle? Does this apply to every other people I meet and that i'm indirectly related? Such like my parents' friends?

Are there specific things that a daughter in law should observe/do that are expected from inlaw (they are Chinese too)? My feeling is i'm not doing enough and since i have little exposure to How to do things properly.

Anything i should do for my parents and inlaw for chinese new year I should pay attention?

Thx!!

Cantonese speak with numbers video (no replies)

I thought this video was interesting, it might go a little too fast but you can rewind it and try catching up, it's for at least intermediate learners.

I've had messages to me where just the # 8 (八卦) was mentioned, so this is good to get used to having numbers linked together and not being surprised if words are presented like that. I learned about 7788 and '5D' and '49'.

I hope someone here likes it.

And as a side-note, a fluent speaker said the girl's accent was way off (which I sort of agree with). So maybe just watch it to get used to the numbers and not to practice any pronunciation.
