Meaning of some words (2 replies)

Cantodict says that 室 sat1 (shi4) means (among other things) :

[n] room; home; house; chamber; apartment

In which case can it mean a house, not a room?

Thank you.

I gave this message the title "meaning of some words" because I am going to ask about the meaning of some other words later, and I don't want to create many threads for that.

Giving Flowers to Someone? (2 replies)

I'm currently studying an online lesson and I have been presented with the following sentence:

送花給老婆婆是善良的行為. (sung faa kap lou po po si sin loeng dik hang wai.)

The reason why I ask is because in Mandarin, it sounds perfect:

送花给老婆婆是善良的行为。(song hua gei lao po po shi shan liang de yinwei) Giving flowers to elderly women is a kind act.

Is it me, or does it this sentence seem a little Mandarinized?

I could be wrong, but it seems this sentence in Cantonese should be more like:

花畀老婆婆係善良.

Any opinion?

In HK some people really love to use English to excessively praise foreigners Cantonese and refuse to speak Cantonese back, this is an example from this morning while taking a taxi. Admittedly I was been cheeky but they stuck rigidly to the excessive(sarcastic) praise in English strategy.
Me:你好, 灣仔酒吧,駱駝道,係時候飲酒
Driver:ok
Me:生意好唔好
Driver: not bad, your Cantonese is very good
Me:而家學緊廣東話,要趁機會同你練習

Driver: here are many people to speak Cantonese to, you don't need to speak to me
Me: 大多數香港人想趁機會同鬼佬練習佢嘅英文,我別有用心想同佢地趁機講廣東話,佢哋別有用心想趁機會同我講英文,點算
Driver: I don't need to practice English with you
Me: 太好,所以你可以遷就我,你可以同我講廣東話
Driver : I don't want to
Me: 點解,你唔可以轉台咩
Driver: 可以。。mm, mm, yes I can, your Cantonese is excellent, you can get a job as a translater here in hong Kong
Me: 你講英文講得頂瓜瓜,你都可以
Driver: you are the best Cantonese speaking foreigner I have ever met.

通番賣國 (no replies)

通番賣國 is an archaic phrase, back in the time Chinese deemed all foreign countries 番邦,their culture inferior to the Chinese culture

However, thanks to T.V and movies,  通番賣國 -" plotting to betray one's own country with foreign ( commit treason)"  is still a familiar term, in day to day life, people use this term to describe any level and any kind of betrayal, in a light hearted tone, because the concept of "foreign= enemy" has became politically incorrect nowadays, ( the politically correct term would be 通敵賣國)

I suggest 通番賣國 be listed in CantoDic as
1. Committing treason (archaic)
2. Committing betrayal ( humorous)

verb都唔verb下

Just wanted to get some clarification on the meaning of the above construction.

For example would ?佢洗都唔洗下 basically just mean he rarely washes (something) or he doesn't even wash it at all etc.

Any other particularly colloquial uses of this construction?

Anyone using the Sidney Lau series? (8 replies)

Currently, I am using a mix of Anki and Glossika with progress that I can live with. The main thing that I have noticed is that the stuff from the glossika sticking in my skull better than other materials in the past. I like the sentences and repetition of the key sentence structure to assist in grammar rule discovery. Now, despite liking my current methods I am looking for a little variation but with a similar structure.

This leads to the topic of Sidney Lau. From what I can see on the previews and reviews, his books are a mass of sentences in dialogue or standalone sentences. On the basis of this the books would seem easy enough to supplement my current study. However, before buying the books, I would like to hear from someone people who are using the books on a regular basis to share their thoughts on a) effectiveness and b) application of language (basically is it still relevant today?).

Thanks,

Matt

Language acquisition theory (no replies)

Does anybody have links to good to articles on Language acquisition theory?
My own thoughts are we need to combine many different skills before we can be considered proficient in a language

1. Pronunciation
2. Vocabulary
3. Grammer
4. Ability to express one thoughts
5. Listening skills
6. Fluency

To master each of the above skills what is the optimal learning strategy?

In terms of learning strategies I can think of the below:
1. Learning from textbook/other resources
2. Using flashcards to learn vocab
3. Listening to audio
4. Talking to natives
5. Reading
What I a mainly interested in what is to optimal weight to place on each of the above methods?

For me at the moment my allocation is:
1. Textbook 20%
2. Flashcards 20%
3. Listening 20%
4. Talking to natives 30%
5. Text messaging 10%

Ultimately I think we need to adjust these weights based on our strengths and weaknesses in the language, if you are weak on listening, it is obvious you should listen to audio more, if you are weak on fluently you should talk more

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

When I was young, I heard someone said 「古龍小說 啲時代背景全部都係 大話西架啦!」at the time, I thought 「大話西」 has to be short for 「大話西遊」(totally fictional) now I think of it, I can appreciate the dirty humor more, which may or may not be intentional....

「大話(西) 」= "as fictional as {Journey to the West}" or if you choose to... " lying ( C word)"

Between a rock and a hard place (1 reply)

When I think of a Chinese idiom that could match the English expression:,  "between a rock and a hard place" ,( in a delimma)  the following phrases come into my mind,

「左右做人難」/「順得哥情失嫂意」" can't please everyone" / please one and you'll offend the others"
「左右為難」/「進退維谷」" tough either way"

After some considering, I think 「進退維谷」match  "between a rock and hard place"the best -- it is valley (difficult terrain) in front and behind you - you are in effect between two tough situations of the same degree.(in a delimma)

進退維谷 is not in CantoDic
